Press context: Bain laid off 150 to 250 people in its India offices in June 2024, 15 to 20% of consulting staff, weighted toward two to three years of experience, after Tiger Global cut its consulting spend (The Ken, Consultancy.in). McKinsey and Bain also deferred 2023 MBA start dates globally (Management Consulted).

Method and caveats

Universe. LinkedIn's IIM Lucknow alumni tool lists 878 people whose profile mentions McKinsey, BCG or Bain anywhere. All 631 who name the firm in their headline were read in full. The remaining 247, where the firm appears only deeper in the profile, were not; they are mostly keyword noise. LinkedIn's own count of people currently at each firm: BCG 163, McKinsey 94, Bain 70.

Self-reported dates. Start and end months are as typed by the alumnus. Where only a year is given, June is assumed. Graduation is set to March of the batch year.

Campus hire. First full-time stint at the firm started 0 to 18 months after graduation, on a two-year PGP (or unspecified programme). One-year IPMX and WMP, PhD and certificate holders are excluded from campus metrics; untick "Two-year PGP only" to include them elsewhere.

Stints. Consecutive roles at one firm (promotions, office moves) are merged into one stint. Summer internships are excluded. Pre-MBA analyst stints count as stints but never as campus hires.

Retention. Share of campus hires still at the firm N months after joining, among those who joined at least N months ago. Recent batches only feed the short horizons, and a point is drawn only when at least eight people qualify.

What it cannot see. People who never updated LinkedIn, deleted the stint, or whose profile shows only the last few roles. About 8% of profiles had experience sections too long to capture fully, so some stints are missing. Every count here is a floor, not a census.
